The day after John baptized Jesus in Bethabara beyond the Jordan River and “borne witness
that this is the Son of God,”John “stood” with two of his disciples “looking upon Jesus as He
walked,” he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard these words and “they
followed Jesus.” “Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said unto them, ‘What seek
ye?’ They said unto him, ‘Rabbi, ( being interpreted, Master or Teacher) where dwellest thou?’
He saith unto them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw, and dwelled with Him that day: for it
was about the tenth hour (two hous before midnight)” One of the two which heard John speak,
and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon, and
said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which means Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.”
(John 1: 28-42 KJV)
Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter,
and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And He siad to them,
‘Follow Me’ and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and
followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-20 KJV)
Jesus’ calling of the apostles may be compared to the calling of the
spiritual faculties into activity. We recall that Peter was known for his faith. John was
known for his love. The Greek meaning of the name Andrew is “strong man,” and Andrew
represents the quality of strength.
